L-arginine is a semi-essential amino acid. This means that a dietary intake of L-arginine is not typically necessary, as the body can usually make the amino acid on its own. However, levels can be low in certain people and supplementation with L-arginine would be beneficial.
L-arginine has several different functions within the cells of the human body, many of which are related to nitric oxide production. It is used in the body to make nitric oxide, an important substance that causes the blood vessels to relax. It may also have antioxidant properties. There is some research that suggests that it may inhibit angiotensin-converting enzymes (ACE), much like ACE inhibitor blood pressure medications. L-arginine may also stimulate the production of certain hormones, such as growth hormones, prolactin, and insulin.
For an erection to occur, the nerves in the penis need to make a chemical called Nitric oxide. Nitric acid is the substance in the body that encourages the spongy parts of the penis to fill with blood during an erection. Because the chemical reaction in the body creates Ntiric oxide from L-Arginine, supplementing with L-Arginine is believed to help stimulate and maintain erections.
L-Arginine is also involved in the production of sperm and is an extremely rich component of seminal fluid (accounting for up to 80% of it). This is a daily supplement, so it should be taken on a long-term basis to feel the full benefits.
